Event (general): The HSTD collection is open to researchers

The Central Press Supervision Authority collection, now deposited in the Security Services Archive, was used by the Ministry of the Interior until 1990. Afterwards, the collection was made available to researchers and the first works using sources linked to censorship began to emerge.

The foundation of the Museum of Lies

The year of the foundation of the museum, 1990, corresponded with the foundation of the German Historical Museum in Berlin. Zabka's new museum was an artistic response to the official engagement with the recent past, the reason for which the Museum was envisioned as a German Historical Museum of Lies (Deutsches Historisches Lügenmuseum). Rejected by many as being “unprofessional”, the museum has been associated by others with the Wunderkammer museum concept or with Sammlermuseums, the precursors to the modern museum.

Event (general): Opening to the public, 1991

After democratic changes in the Republic of Slovenia and the proclamation of Slovenian independence in 1991, the collection became open to the public without any formal restrictions. The collection, by its structure, represented opposition to the work that could not be printed in the country but was published in exile. Most of it is the work by Slovene anti-communist émigrés, although it also holds the work of other émigrés from the territory of the former Yugoslav state. It also has works of dissidents from the socialist period, among which are the most prominent are those by Milovan Đilas (interview with Janežič, Helena).
